Salon: Can you become Jew-ish?

  • Chez Krame 10921 Candlelight Lane Potomac, MD, 20854 United States (map)

Another provocative Salon topic for us to discuss.  There is a tradition in Judaism of the Ger Toshav, the stranger that dwells among us, so the issue is not altogether new. Judaism differs from other religions in our definition of membership following birth where as most religions require that you opt in. Can we consider someone as "Jewish" or "Jew-ish" without the stringent test of who is a Jew or formal conversion? Is this helpful for those resisting interfaith marriages?  How do we regard those who opt in? Brunch will be served. Sign up here!  For further reading see Rabbi Steve Greenberg's article at CLAL
